Lowestoft received a £3.8 million Water Industry National Environment Programme investment in a series of infrastructure upgrades and maintenance projects which began in 2020 and completed in March 2024.  

 

Work included increasing the storage capacity of the network, installing state-of-the-art pumps and screens to reduce the risk of blockages from unflushables like wet wipes and sanitary products and closing off three Combined Sewer Overflow outfalls.  

Anglian Water’s Recreational Waters Technical Manager, Greg Hall said: “Since we began the project in 2020 the Lowestoft North beach has improved to the Excellent classification, and we very much hope the Lowestoft South beach will improve from Good to Excellent soon as well.” 

 

This work plays a critical role in ensuring the bathing waters in our region remain some of the best. However, our work doesn’t stop there, we’ll continue to commit to keeping our bathing waters in top condition now and into the future and improve any areas that are not yet classified as Excellent.   

 

For those visiting one of our coastal bathing water sites, please remember that we all have a part to play in keeping our beaches and seas clean. You can help by: 

  • take part in a 2-minute beach clean  
  • always pick up litter 
  • clean up after your dog  
  • don’t leave food for sea birds to eat 
  • if you live in a coastal town, use an approved WaterSafe plumber to check you drains are connected correctly.
